On Wednesday, Shubman Gill scored a century at Edgbaston in the second Test against England, taking India to 310/5 at the end of Day 1.
Gill, batting at No. 4 after Karun Nair, who had been promoted, helped to steady the innings. This is his second ton in two games since he became captain.
Nasser Hussain, former English batter, praised Gill’s innings saying he would be a good No. 3. He looks like a natural number three, he said. He compared Gill to Joe Root, saying how well he is batting abroad. He’s doing what England have done with Joe Root, he added. Hussain noted the pressure of captaincy and batting away from home when the ball moves around but also Gill’s composure today. I thought he was really composed today. It was old fashioned batting. He had to get in, grind out a score and then cash in in the last session, he explained.

Ravi Shastri, former Indian all-rounder and head coach, praised Gill for improving his defence to suit English Test conditions. I think the biggest difference is he has worked on his defence, he said. He added that Gill now allows the ball to come and hit the bat, trusts his defence and that has helped him a lot. He’s trusting his defence and then we know he has all the shots in the box… just that little work on his defence has done a world of good, he explained.
