Nasser Hussain was surprised by Ravindra Jadeja’s struggles to execute his plans at Headingley in the first Test against England. The former England captain reckons the 36-year-old has a lot to think about before the second game at Edgbaston on Wednesday, July 2.
Jadeja took just one wicket despite the conditions being tailor-made for him. Shoaib Malik, England’s young spinner, who has been under fire, took three wickets.
In his Daily Mail column, Hussain wrote about how Ben Duckett handled Jadeja’s bowling and Ben Stokes struggled. He noted that Jadeja didn’t use the rough patches, suggesting he might still be thinking of subcontinent conditions.
Hussain wrote, Jadeja has a lot to think about. I was surprised how long it took him to adjust his bowling on the last day at Headingley. The rough area wasn’t big for the left-hander, but it was wide and full and Jadeja bowled straight to Duckett, consistently missing the rough.
He continued, It’s different in India where the pitches offer more turn, but in England you need to find the rough spots, which he didn’t do to Duckett. They must have discussed it at tea and he bowled fuller and wider to Stokes, making it tough for him. Sadly it was too late.
Hussain suggested including another spinner, Kuldeep Yadav but questioned how India would fit him in.

The former batsman wrote, “India might play a second spinner at Edgbaston, with Kuldeep Yadav as an option. The left-arm wrist-spinner will give away more hittable balls but will get more bounce and will need to be watched carefully as he spins the ball both ways. The question is how will they fit him in. This might mean leaving out a batsman or a seamer. It will be interesting to see.
India are 1-0 down in the series. If they play Kuldeep, they might have to leave out Shardul Thakur as the all-rounder didn’t have a big impact with bat or ball in the first Test.
