Cricket enthusiasts recall the great Shane Warne and one of his most memorable moments on the pitch. Warne truly had this almost magical kind of spin bowling, everything from these cheeky leg-spinners to the flippers that would leave many batters quite puzzled. But the real memory that stuck with people was an especially clever one he brewed for English batsman Mike Gatting during the Manchester Test.
On the 2nd day of the Test, hardly was there a ball bowled that could ever compete with that one. Bowling from over the wicket, Warne unleashed a delivery that set out on a path of immaculate drift and spin with an awful turn. It pitched on leg-stump and then sharply turned, missing Gatting’s bat by a whisker, uprooting the bails from off-stump. The crowd went wild at Old Trafford; the sight of Warne celebrating hysterically while Gatting stood in shock, trying to comprehend what just happened, was extraordinary.
On the 28th anniversary of that truly memorable moment, Warne recalled how it changed his life forever. He took a little time to return thanks to Gatting for missing the ball that made that delivery the Ball of the Century. In an Instagram post in 2021, he expressed his joy: This day changed my life 28 years ago. I was just 23 years old and playing in my first ever Ashes series, and this was my very first ball. I still can’t believe it happened. Thanks for missing it, Mr. Gatting, and turning this ball into what is now known as the #ballofthecentury
