Back in the year 2011, on this date, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru were thrashed by the Chennai Super Kings in an IPL final. Under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, they successfully defended the title to assert themselves as the most successful franchise having two trophies to their name.
Playing at home at MA Chidambaram Stadium, the Super Kings truly held a massive victory of 58 runs over the Royal Challengers. After winning the toss, CSK elected to put their opponents into the field and, with a solid opening stand between Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay, managed to score a competitive total of 205/5.
Hussey and Vijay shared a spectacular 159-run opening partnership. Hussey played a fine 63 off 45 balls, but Vijay stole the limelight with his blazing 95 off just 52 balls, which included 4 fours and 6 sixes. The only downside for CSK was the quick dismissal of Dhoni for 22 runs, leading to a bit of a middle-order collapse.
For RCB, the only shining lights with the ball were Chris Gayle, who managed to grab 2 wickets conceding 34 runs. Dhoni’s plan to bowl off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin at Gayle paid off as Ashwin dismissed him for a duck with a well-pitched delivery. Ashwin finished with excellent figures of 4 overs for just 16 runs.

Once Gayle was back in the pavilion, RCB depended upon Virat Kohli (35) and AB de Villiers (18) to lead the fightback. Instead, they failed with only Saurabh Tiwary (42 not out) standing up to the occasion as a resistance. The RCB finished their innings at 147/8 with increasing difficulty in their second IPL final after losing it to Deccan Chargers in 2009.
