Do you remember July 2, 2022, at Edgbaston when India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah surprised everyone with the bat, not the ball. In a rare moment, Bumrah scored 35 runs in one over against England’s Stuart Broad in a Test match.
That over became the most expensive in Test cricket history. Bumrah, known for his bowling, showed he could also bat. Broad bowled short balls, thinking Bumrah would struggle. The plan failed as Bumrah pulled and hooked, scoring easily.
Bumrah started with a boundary on the first ball. The second ball was a wide that went for four, adding five runs. The third ball was a no-ball and Bumrah smashed it for six, giving India seven runs. Then Bumrah hit three fours punishing Broad’s short balls. On the fifth ball Bumrah hit another six and on the last ball a single.

In all the over had 35 runs, 29 from Bumrah and 6 extras. Before this the most runs in a Test over were 28 by Brian Lara, George Bailey and Keshav Maharaj. Bumrah broke that record. Broad also gave away 35 runs in an over. In 2007 Yuvraj Singh hit him for six sixes in a T20 World Cup match.
In that 2022 innings Bumrah scored 31 off 16 balls with two sixes and four fours. That helped India score 416 in the first innings. But India lost the match by 7 wickets.
