The right-arm leg-spinner announced his retirement from the game at the age of 36. His heartfelt message on Instagram whilst bidding goodbye was well appreciated by the many fans who viewed and responded to it:Closing this chapter with Gratitude !! Retiring from all formats of the game, thank you everyone for your support throughout this beautiful journey.
Retiring from cricket was never an easy choice-and for Piyush, it must have been worse. He has remained in the limelight ever since making his India debut in 2006. His last game for India was in but 2012; since then, he mostly played domestic cricket in the Indian Premier League while going on to maintain his passion for the sport.
Throughout the years, he proved himself to be a somewhat capable leg-spinner. Although he was still playing the IPL last year, the excitement for the 2025 season just wasn’t there for him. It had become harder for him to secure his spots and felt that they weren’t adding up. It is clear he didn’t want to continue if he was not able to contribute as he used to.
The flight through the cricket world has been a colorful flight: from the high of contributing to India’s World Cup win, a few leaps, and bounds into the very real challenge of being unable to come to terms with the game at times. It is a bit bittersweet for him and his fans; I am sure they would have cherished many memories of his performances. As he prepares to hang up his boots, there would be much to reflect on, and he will be proud to have made an indelible mark in a sport that he loved with passion. Great matches played with great legends of the game will be etched in the annals of cricket for years and have given unadulterated joy to many. Now, as he turns away from this page, it is clear that the game will forever haunt him.
