The Punjab Kings are gearing up for their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against the Gujarat Titans this coming Tuesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium. But there’s still some uncertainty about who will actually take the field as the opening pair. Even though the team has trained hard and features a solid lineup under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, assistant coach Brad Haddin mentioned that they are still figuring out their best option for the starters.
During a press conference ahead of the game, Haddin acknowledged how tricky it can be to nail down the right opening partnership. He explained, We’re still not entirely sure who will open for us. We’ve got players like Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis who have performed well in this role in the past. So, we need to make sure we find the right mix. The challenge lies in facing off against the powerful bowling attack from the Gujarat Titans, led by Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Siraj.
Despite this uncertainty, Haddin is optimistic about how well the team has prepared for the upcoming season. He said, Our main aim since we got together is to make sure our players are ready to go this season. We had an excellent training camp in Dharamsala, where we got the chance to connect and build relationships with a lot of our Indian players. The talent we have is really exciting. These guys are top-notch athletes, and I’m confident they are going to play with courage.
With head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Iyer at the helm, the Punjab Kings are focused on creating a team that works well together. Haddin noted that their squad has the flexibility to handle various match situations thanks to its diverse skill set. He emphasized, We want our players to play with guts and adapt to the situations they face. This is a fresh lineup, and we’ve got players for every role who can step into different positions as needed. We’ve got experience right across the team.
Haddin also praised captain Shreyas Iyer for his leadership style. He believes that Iyer is key in building a strong culture of unity and commitment within the team. The culture of our team comes from our leaders. Shreyas Iyer is a captain who really drives everyone to excel. He’s had a lot of success in this format and has united the team. The coaching staff and players are all aligned in our goals. We’re a really close-knit group, and that’s largely because of the high standards and work ethic Shreyas brings to the table, Haddin remarked.
With the season just around the corner, the Punjab Kings seem to be in the right mindset as they prepare for what should be an exciting match. Fans are surely eager to see how this all plays out on the pitch!
