Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain, said bigger moments usually lead to better outcomes and to stay calm when the pressure is on. In the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday, he focused on his breathing to keep calm and said everyone needs to show intent from the start when chasing a big target.
He led the team to a good win, PBKS beat MI by 5 wickets in Qualifier 2 and are now into the IPL 2025 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He scored 87 off 41 as PBKS chased 204 in 19 overs. Josh Inglis also scored 38 off 21.
I love big moments. I tell myself and the team if you can stay calm in those situations things usually go well. Today was a good example of that for me—I focused more on breathing than feeling anxious, Shreyas Iyer said after the match.
He also talked about how the team bounced back after losing to RCB earlier in the season. The other batsmen were doing well. I know the more time I spend at the crease the better I get. After losing to RCB we just had to let it go and not dwell on what went wrong because we’ve been playing well all season.
The highlight of the Punjab innings was the partnership between Iyer and Nehal Wadhera who added 84 runs for the 4th wicket before Ashwani Kumar got Wadhera out in the 16th over. In the first innings Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav both scored 44 to help MI post 203/6 in 20 overs. Iyer was the Player of the Match for his 87 which included 5 fours and 8 sixes.
