The IPL is on, but limited audiences are tuning in to observe the Indian Test team as it prepares to face England in a five-match series starting June 20. At present, the captaincy spot is vacant in India, because of the recent retirement of Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. The discussion has since become intense over the appointment of the new captain, and indications have been that maybe Shubman Gill is the one.
This news has split opinion online, with half the fans applauding the rise of Gill while others prefer a seasoned campaigner to fill in. Former Indian spinner R Ashwin applauded Gill for the leadership he displayed in IPL 2025, yet he also found a good word for Ravindra Jadeja as a captain candidate for the forthcoming WTC cycle between 2025 and 2027.

“Let’s not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced in the squad. He deserves to be considered. If you’re ready to train someone new for two years to make them captain, Jadeja can hold that role too. They could even make him vice-captain,” said Ashwin.
While backing Jadeja, Ashwin also had some compliments to give to Gill. He was hopeful that the Gujarat Titans would make it to the IPL playoffs, thus being a further aid in the development of Gill’s leadership, but added, “But being a Test captain isn’t just about one good season; a leader needs to be well-versed in first-class cricket too.” Also, keep an eye; there are whispers that an official decision might soon be taken to announce Gill as captain in a press conference.
