Rohit Sharma has registered his name among the best ever captains in Indian cricket history. In the last one year, he has taken India to win two ICC titles. He led them to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In white-ball cricket, Rohit has been phenomenal. But his test form raised some doubts about his place on the team.
That was the reason that he dropped himself from a test match during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. India couldn’t qualify for the World Test Championship final 2023-25 and lost a home test series against New Zealand, which was the first-ever series whitewash at home.
However, Rohit has not confirmed that he has hung up his boots from the longest format. On May 7, Rohit took to social media and announced his test retirement. Notably, Rohit has already retired from T20 international after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and now has retired from the Test format as well.
Rohit Sharma announces his retirement from Test Cricket
Rohit’s retirement means an end to a glorious 11-year stint in red-ball cricket. He took to Instagram and wrote, “Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

The 38-year-old has been a standout performer for India in red-ball cricket for the last 4-5 years. He featured in 67 Tests, scoring 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. He also scored 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries with a best of 212.
Rohit has been India’s top scorer in the World Test Championship. He has scored 2716 runs in 40 tests at an average of 41.15, with nine hundreds and 8 half-centuries. But his recent form and strings of low scores against New Zealand and Australia saw him facing a lot of criticism.
There was some speculation that the Indian selection committee might drop him from the upcoming five-match Test series in England. And now Rohit himself has announced his retirement. It will be interesting to see who will be the next person to lead India in the longest format of the game.
