Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings were unfortunate to lose the IPL 2025 final to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru by only six runs. The match was played at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, but Punjab fell short of chasing down the 191 runs set by their opponents.
The fans were hoping for a big show from Iyer, especially after he burnt the pitch for 97 and 87 earlier in the IPL season at the very same venue, but he could manage only a single run, off two balls, in the final.
With this loss, a rare list of few captains with multiple IPL finals losses has increased in numbers. Dhoni is one of them, having lost thrice with the Chennai Super Kings, and this was Iyer’s second loss in an IPL final.

Both teams he has captained—Delhi Capitals and now Punjab Kings—have come up short in 2020 and 2025 finals respectively. He is the only player to have consolation losses as captain of two different teams. This was Iyer’s first year as captain of Punjab Kings, and he scored 604 runs in 17 matches, following being bought in the auction for Rs 26.75 crore.
