Gambhir and Gill held a press conference at the BCCI office today in Mumbai prior to jetting off to England for the five-Test series, where Gill spoke about the transition of leadership after the retirement of legendary Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the 7:30 p.m. IST press conference. He admitted the challenge of coming in without those two: “It will be really hard to replace Virat and Rohit.”
Gill then went on to describe how he would deal with the absence of the two on the tour. “There’s always pressure on tours. Those two have so much experience and have won a lot, it’s tough to fill their shoes. But we’re all used to this kind of pressure,” he said.
His frank response showed his respect for Kohli and Sharma and his confidence in his own team. He became India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, and has since represented India in 32 Tests, scoring 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, including five centuries and seven fifties.
Gill will be looked up to to lead India through this challenging English tour with the same spirit shown by his predecessors. Thereafter, with Gambhir’s support and an experienced team, India has the hope of giving ample competition to their Test-bred reputation on foreign soil.
