On the first day of the second Test against England, Shubman Gill scored a century for India. At Edgbaston in Birmingham, Gill, batting at No. 4 in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 114 off 216 balls.
This century on Wednesday is Gill’s third Test century against England. He joins Mohammad Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar and Rahul Dravid in an elite group.
Like Gill, Azharuddin, Vengsarkar and Dravid all scored three Test centuries in a row against England in their careers.
Azharuddin made his debut against England in December 1984 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, scoring 110 in the first innings. Then he continued to play well against England, scoring 105 in the second innings of the second Test and 122 in the first innings of the third Test. He is the only Indian batsman to score a century in his first three Tests.
Vengsarkar scored 137 in the first innings of the Kanpur Test against England in January-February 1985. Then in June 1986, he scored 100 in the next two matches against England. He remained unbeaten on 126 in the first innings of the Lord’s Test and 102 not out in the second innings of the Leeds Test.
Dravid, who led India to a series win in England in 2007, scored three Test centuries against England twice in his 16-year Test career.
In 2002, during India’s tour of England, Dravid scored 115 in the second innings of the Nottingham Test. Then he scored 148 and 217 in the first innings of the next two matches at Headingley in Leeds and The Oval.

In 2008, when England toured India for a two-match series, Dravid scored 136 in the first innings of the second Test at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Later in the first two matches of India’s tour of England in 2011, he scored 103* and 117 in the first innings of the matches at Lord’s and Nottingham.
Last year, Gill scored 110 in the first innings of the fifth Test against England at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Then he scored 147 in the first Test against Ben Stokes’ team at Headingley from June 20 to 24, 2025.
