The Board of Control for Cricket in India is grappling with whom to raise to captaincy with barely a month left for the five-Test cricket series against England. Being the top name in the race, there remain questions about why Jasprit Bumrah is not even in the spotlight. Bumrah’s possibility of captaincy was terminated about four months ago when he was forced to leave the SCG for X-rays due to injury. Without him, India could not really win that last Test against Australia, and it seems harder now for him to be the captain in England.
It is said that a few big guns in Indian cricket don’t like the meteoric rise of Gill; however, the suggestion that they haven’t been approached before deciding the next captain seems far-fetched in itself.
This may affect Bumrah, who is now 31, because, with permanent leadership likely out of his reach, he finds himself in a delicate position; after Sydney, he was sidelined for three months, while he had sat out for almost a year before that due to injury prior to the T20 World Cup in Australia three years ago.
In the other camp, Gill looks all set to become India’s new Test captain; reports claim that he may be formally named captain when the selectors announce the team for the England tour.

Two recent incidents point to his impending leadership, with one being that while in Delhi for the game against the Capitals, he had lunch with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir for several hours in conversation, and, after the game against Mumbai Indians, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar was involved in a long discussion with Shubman Gill.
