Indian Test captain Shubman Gill had a dream start to the home series against the West Indies, slamming the valiant fifty in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Coming at four, Gill got 50 runs off 100 balls before the West Indies counterpart, Roston Chase, got him out.
Shubman Gill joins Gavaskar in a massive feat after 47 years
This was, in fact, Shubman Gill’s very first innings as India captain in Tests away from home. As soon as the elegant Punjab batsman reached his fifty, he joined the minority who have scored a fifty-plus score on their maiden Test innings as Indian captain at home.

Interestingly, Sunil Gavaskar was the last Indian captain to register a fifty-plus score in his maiden outing at home. The talismanic opener had achieved the feat in India’s Test against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, in 1978. After a hiatus of 47 years, Gill has now equalled the feat and shares company with Gavaskar in this prestigious list.
Shubman Gill fails to convert his fifty unlike Gavaskar
While Sunil Gavaskar piled 205 runs in that match against the West Indies, Shubman Gill fell soon after reaching his fifty. The right-handed batsman, who had shown sparkling form on the India Tour of England, returned to the dugout in the 57th over when Roston Chase got his prized scalp.
