Ryan ten Doeschate, the Indian men’s team’s assistant coach, has praised Mohammed Siraj, the 31-year-old fast bowler who is leading the bowling charts in the ongoing five-Test series against England. Siraj has taken 13 wickets in six innings across three Tests. Jasprit Bumrah is next with 12 wickets in two matches.
Doeschate, who joined Gambhir’s coaching staff last year, has worked with Siraj for a year now. He says Siraj is like a lion. The assistant coach feels that when Siraj has the ball, something exciting is likely to happen.
“We’re lucky to have him. He may not always get the wickets you expect from a fast bowler, but he’s got a lot of heart. What he brings to the bowling attack means that when he has the ball, you feel something will happen, Doeschate said on Thursday.
He’s not going to avoid work, so we need to manage his workload to make sure he’s fit enough to do his best, he added.
Siraj played all five Tests for India in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and bowled over 120 overs in the first three matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
When asked about India’s bowling attack for the fourth Test after India’s first training session in Manchester, Doeschate said the team will decide in the next few days.

We’ll decide in Manchester. We know we’ve got Bumrah for one of the last two tests. It’s clear the series is on the line now in Manchester, so we’re likely to play him, said Doeschate.
“But we have to look at all the factors. How many days of cricket will we get? What gives us the best chance of winning? And how does that fit with the Oval, looking at the last two games as part of the series?
