South Africa has drafted the former England bowler Stuart Broad as the consultant for the World Test Championship Final against Australia. This is boldly described as Broad’s first actual coaching role after he made a smooth transition into broadcasting immediately after his playing days. He retired from international cricket after the 2023 home Ashes and will therefore help the Proteas ahead of the big Test against his old rivals, Australia, at Lord’s.
The Telegraph UK reported that Broad, with his 113 wickets at Lord’s coming in second after James Anderson, will not, because of his broadcasting commitments, be in the dressing room during the Final. However, in the week leading up to the game, he will work closely with the players, including Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen, on preparations for what they will face at Lord’s in terms of conditions and bowling strategies.
Over the last couple of years, Broad has been a commentator on SA20, cementing his good working relationship with South Africa. In retirement, he’s still finding ways to torment the Australians. While Australia is looking to defend their WTC title, it is South Africa’s first time in the final. They have a warm-up match against Zimbabwe on June 3 to prepare. Cricket South Africa ensured that all their IPL players were back by May 27 for a week’s preparation.
