Sri Lanka has named its women ODI tri-series squad against India and South Africa, set to kick off at home on April 27. The team, that will be captained by Chamari Athapaththu, is widely expected to bounce back following a hard series defeat of 2-0 in New Zealand. A major overhaul saw eight fresh faces incorporated into the set-up.
Among them is enthralling debutant spinner Malki Madara, who will get her chance to shine in the ODI format. She really sparkled in her T20I debut in NZ, capturing people’s notice with her vital contributions in securing what turned out to be Sri Lanka’s lone victory on that tour. Accompanying her are some illustrious names, including batter Vishmi Gunaratne, all-rounder Nilakshi Silva, and opener Hasini Perera, who are all making their way back to the fray. It’s great to see them back, as they bring to the much older but also very talented team promising young talents like Piumi Wathsala, who will look to make an impact.

The induction of Madara and the return of Inoka Ranaweera strongly indicate that Sri Lanka intends to boost their bowling department. This tri-series is thus a significant platform for all teams to prepare for the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup that will be held on the Indian subcontinent. The selectors have attempted to blend new blood with experience so that some momentum could be built ahead of that all-important tournament. Definitely an exciting time in Sri Lanka women’s cricket, and definitely, fans will not be disappointed to see how this revamped squad performs.
