After India’s loss to England in the 5th Test at Kennington Oval, London, Sunil Gavaskar expressed concerns about opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Jaiswal was out for 2 in the first session after being trapped in front of the stumps by Gus Atkinson. He has been struggling for a big score since the second Test. Gavaskar said Jaiswal seems to be having problems with balls coming back at him from around the wicket.
Gavaskar said Jaiswal might be uncertain and less confident now. He looked good when he scored a hundred in the first Test, but he hasn’t looked fluent since. That may be why he isn’t moving his front foot far enough forward to stop the ball from coming back in. He’s a good player, though. Someone should sit with him and work on his technique, help him get his front foot forward and keep his shoulder from opening up too much. His back shoulder is moving towards first or second slip, which makes it tough to bring the bat down straight. If he keeps his shoulder more towards the wicketkeeper and first slip, he’ll hit the ball straight. Gavaskar said this on Sony Sports.

Before this series Jaiswal had one dismissal and averaged 116 against right-arm seamers from all over the wicket. Now with seven dismissals in this series, his average has dropped to 24.7. Jaiswal started the series well with scores of 101 and 87 in the first two Tests. Since then he has only managed one fifty in the last five innings. So far he has scored 293 runs from nine innings in the series, averaging 32.55, with two fifties and a hundred.
After Jaiswal’s dismissal KL Rahul was also out for 14, his first series defeat. After these early setbacks Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill took India to lunch at 72/2.
