Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary cricketer, has shared his thoughts on how the relaxed style of skipper Rajat Patidar has positively influenced the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). After facing many years of setbacks in the IPL, RCB seems to have finally found a way to turn things around, and Gavaskar seems pretty optimistic about their chances this season. They recently celebrated their first win at Chepauk in what feels like an eternity – 17 years, to be exact – and they’ve also broken a six-match losing streak at Wankhede Stadium.
Gavaskar explained how Patidar is bringing a more chill vibe to the team. “He seems to be enjoying the role of captain. It’s been a long wait for a title, but it looks like they’ve figured out what it takes to win. With a laid-back approach, it’s also giving other players the chance to step up and lend their experience to push the team forward,” he shared during an interview with JioStar.
He also mentioned the solid support from Dinesh Karthik, who acts as a mentor for the team. “Karthik has a great way of connecting with the younger players, offering them advice and support. People don’t always recognize just how much of an impact he has,” Gavaskar pointed out. The presence of senior players who are eager to help out has created a supportive atmosphere. “Rajat is lucky to be in such an environment with a group that is really driven to win,” he added.
On the topic of Virat Kohli, Gavaskar praised his recent approach to batting. He noted that Kohli has been more aggressive this season, especially by attempting lofted shots earlier in the innings rather than playing it safe and waiting. “It’s clear to see the difference in his mindset. Bowlers who were ready for his typical drives now find themselves watching the ball sail over them for boundaries,” he remarked, emphasizing how this change is keeping bowlers on their toes.
Switching gears, Gavaskar also addressed Rohit Sharma from the Mumbai Indians. He encouraged Rohit to be smarter with his shot selection, especially during the power play. “When he gets out early, it really stings, whether it’s for the Mumbai Indians or Team India. He needs to pick his shots wisely,” Gavaskar said. He acknowledges the need for aggression but emphasizes the importance of calculating the right risks to take.
Lastly, he touched on Jasprit Bumrah, who is making his comeback after a long break due to a back injury. Gavaskar mentioned how great it was to see Bumrah bowling at his usual speed, a comforting sign for fans. “Seeing him bowl at over 140 km/h was a relief. I think as he plays a few more matches, he’ll find his rhythm and could even touch 150 km/h as he regains his confidence,” he added, leaving fans hopeful for what’s to come.
All in all, it looks like RCB, under Patidar’s leadership and with the guidance from experienced players like Karthik, is starting to find its groove in the IPL.
