The BCCI has come out with a big announcement after the Champions Trophy victory, revealing a cash prize of Rs 58 crore for the winning team. Each player and the head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will take home Rs 3 crore. As for the assistant coaches and support staff, they’ll be rewarded with Rs 50 lakh each, while BCCI officials will receive Rs 25 lakh each.
Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary former India captain, has brought up an interesting point regarding coach Gautam Gambhir. He wonders if Gambhir might follow in the footsteps of Rahul Dravid, his predecessor, who decided to share his winnings equally with the rest of the coaching team after the Indian team’s T20 World Cup win in 2024. Dravid, known for putting the team first, chose to take the same amount as his support staff instead of pocketing a larger share. But so far, Gambhir hasn’t made his intentions clear on this matter.

In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar reflected on the recent rewards and emphasized Dravid’s approach. In the wake of the ICC T20 World Cup win, Dravid was all about teamwork and even turned down a bigger amount, choosing to share the prize with his coaching staff, he wrote. It’s now been a couple of weeks since the BCCI announced the Champions Trophy rewards, and it seems fans are left wondering whether Gambhir will take a page out of Dravid’s book, or if he sees this differently.

Gavaskar didn’t hold back in praising the BCCI for how they reward players after such significant victories. Our boys winning the Champions Trophy is a big deal, and the BCCI stepping up with Rs 58 crore for everyone involved is fantastic, he noted. He reminded readers of the earlier cash prize of Rs 125 crore following last year’s ICC T20 World Cup triumph, showing that the Board definitely isn’t shy about rewarding success.

He also appreciates how the BCCI is not just handing out cash but is also allowing players to keep the prize money from the ICC, which adds up nicely. This generous split not only shows the Board is in a healthy financial position but also reflects its commitment to appreciating the hard work that players and staff put in to bring home these trophies.
