Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I captain of India, is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Indian Premier League. The 34-year-old batsman had an impressive day on Sunday, April 20, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He walked in at No. 3 during a chase of 177 runs against the Chennai Super Kings and didn’t hold back. In just 30 balls, he smashed six fours and knocked five sixes, racking up a solid 68 runs.
But it wasn’t just Surya shining that day; Rohit Sharma was also on fire. He ended the match unbeaten with a robust score of 76 runs off just 45 balls, hitting four fours and six sixes along the way. His performance played a huge role in helping MI achieve their target in just 15.4 overs, losing only one wicket in the process. The two players put together a remarkable partnership of 114 runs for the second wicket, making a huge impact on the game.
Just like any other fan of MI, Surya was thrilled by Rohit’s display of skill that day. He shared his thoughts in a video on Instagram posted by IPL, commending Rohit and noting how it was a much-needed boost for both Rohit and the team. Surya mentioned, “The way he batted from the other end – given how the tournament was going for him – says a lot about him. He’s always been one of our most experienced players in this format, and to come through in a crucial match like that is a huge relief for all of us.”
Although Rohit has always been a star player for MI and holds the record for the most runs in the IPL, he had been struggling a bit in this season up until that point. But when it mattered the most, especially in a high-stakes game against Chennai – one of the biggest rivals in the IPL – he really stepped up and reminded everyone of his class.
Thanks to his performance, Rohit earned the Player of the Match award, which was a nice cherry on the top. In doing so, he made history by becoming the first Indian player to achieve 20 Player of the Match awards in the IPL. This latest performance also marked his ninth time scoring over 50 runs in matches against the Chennai Super Kings, solidifying his reputation in the league. All in all, it was a day to remember for Rohit, Surya, and the whole Mumbai Indians team.
