Glenn Maxwell is preparing for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. He’s thinking of adding a new skill to his game: bowling with the new ball in the powerplay overs. He thinks the subcontinent will be good for it.
Maxwell is already a big hitter and useful off-spinner. He’s usually brought on as a part-time bowler to slow down the run rate. But now he wants to do more.
I think in the subcontinent a spinner will get more assistance from the pitch early on, Maxwell told cricket.com.au. He said if given the chance he’d like to bowl with the new ball on pitches that favour spin and he enjoys taking wickets.
The new ball with its hard seam can grip well on those dry surfaces. So we might consider it going forward. I love getting wickets. I always get surprised when I get someone out. My job in the powerplay is to do my best, he said.
Maxwell also mentioned that since his batting position is changing he’s focusing on fitting into whatever role the team needs.
Interestingly he has experience in this area. A memorable moment was in the 2023 ODI World Cup final when he got the wicket of India’s captain Rohit Sharma. That wicket was crucial in Australia’s win.
I’m always surprised when I get a wicket. I enjoy getting wickets. It’s always surprising anytime I get anyone out. My job in the powerplay is to do my best, he repeated.
In the current T20I series against South Africa he’s already bowled two overs in the powerplay. In the second game he made a big impact taking two big wickets including the captain Aiden Markram.

Even though he doesn’t have a set batting position in the Australian team he’s happy to do what the team asks of him.
I’m trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as flexible as possible, said Maxwell who has played 123 T20Is.
So far Glenn Maxwell has scored 2771 runs in 123 T20Is for Australia, his highest score being 145 not out. He has also taken 49 wickets. The series is level 1-1. Australia and South Africa play on August 16.
India and Sri Lanka will co-host the T20 World Cup 2026. If he’s fit he’ll be in the Australian team to win back the trophy they last won in 2021.
