Washington Sundar, the talented all-rounder from Tamil Nadu started his Indian Premier League (IPL) career in 2017 with the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). He played under Steve Smith and MS Dhoni. He was soon known as a player with lot of talent.
Over time people expected more from him especially after he spent more time with Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach. Sundar has become a regular in the Indian Test team and has been improving his skills in every format of the game.
The left handed batsman lived up to the expectations and scored 284 runs in 4 Test matches he played, averaging 47.33. He played a crucial role in tying the Test match in Manchester by scoring his first Test century. He proved himself many times. Gambhir’s decision to pick him over Kuldeep turned out to be a good one.
Since the conditions were helping the fast bowlers, Sundar didn’t get many chances to bowl but he made the most of the ones he got. He finished with 7 wickets, averaging 38.57.
Sundar spoke about playing under Gambhir and said he was happy to see him happy at the end of the series. Sundar said Gambhir also wears the No. 5 on the back of his jersey and he was a very skilled left handed batsman. The only thing Sundar didn’t like was bowling to him in the IPL because he was very successful against him. But Sundar also said Gambhir is a great person and has lot of faith in all of them, that they will always fight and win the game. Sundar was happy to see him happy at the end of the series.

Before the series started Gambhir was getting criticized because the team lost to New Zealand and Australia in the Test series. But he proved his critics wrong by leading a young Indian team to a 2-2 series draw. Shubman Gill and the team played with lot of energy and won a game they almost lost at the Oval by 6 runs which tied the series. Sundar also spoke about the Gambhir-Gill leadership and said their faith in the players really worked. He said they kept the dressing room calm throughout the series. Their messages were clear and told the players what they expected. Sundar said both of them believe in their players which really helps the team.
Looking ahead, it’s not clear if Sundar will be picked in the Indian T20I team for the T20 Asia Cup in 2025 in UAE. He wasn’t picked in the South Zone team for the Duleep Trophy 2025 so he won’t be playing in that tournament.
