In the opinion of their head coach, Daniel Vettori, the reason why the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are not functioning as a team is because they are not. Consequently, it is hurting them deep into the Indian Premier League (IPL).
They need to win at least five games out of the possible five with just a playoff chance. Before the showdown against Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday, Vettori stated that SRH had not been consistent enough for an aspiring campaigner against the best in the competition this season.
“I don’t think we’ve put together complete performances. We’ve let ourselves down in one area almost every match. The teams winning right now are doing it consistently,” he said at the pre-match press conference.
Imagine while Vettori lashed out at the team’s lack of team performance, he could not hold back his praise of Aniket Verma, 23. Verma, a newcomer in the league, has scored 190 runs in nine matches, with a top score of 74. “I’ve been very pleased with Aniket. He came into the team and has played in a way that really fits us. He’s become one of our key players,” said Vettori the player.
The Sunrisers now sit ninth place in the table with just six points and a net run rate of -1.103 after winning just three matches out of nine played. They entered the GT match off a five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk, where Harshal Patel was named the Player of the Match after taking four wickets.
