Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell gave his account of the sudden retirement from the ODI format of cricket. The 36-year-old put out the statement earlier this month, while also saying that he was still available for T20I selection, with Australia preparation underway for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
In the recent podcast, he explained why he took this decision and remembers his talk with former teammate and current Chairman of Selectors George Bailey. Injuries had taken their toll, and Maxwell felt he was not really contributing to the team. He suggested to Bailey in their meeting that maybe it was time to start looking for a replacement for him as they prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Maxwell refrained from forcing himself on the Front Word Podcast: “I’ve always said I wouldn’t step aside if I felt capable of playing. I didn’t want to hang on for a few matches just for myself. They’re clearly moving in one direction, so this gives them the best chance to shape the lineup for the next World Cup. I understand how essential planning is.”

He stated he simply did not want to play another series just for selfish reasons; instead, he wanted to give Cricket Australia adequate time to regroup for the next big event. Maxwell, with two World Cup wins under his belt, in 2015 and 2023, is yet the third major name to have retired from ODI cricket in this year, after Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis.
