The BCCI has named the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against England, with Shubman Gill being named the captain. The selection committee’s choice not to pick senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami, with his vast reservoir of experience, came as a shock to many.
Agarkar, chairman of the selection committee, went on to deny that this was a conditional exclusion, stating that recent MRI scans on Shami indicated newer injury concerns. The doctors felt that he wasn’t fit for the entire tour, and so he was kept out from the Test side.
“There’s been a little setback in the last week, some MRIs done. So, he wasn’t really going to be able to play five Tests. Just on medical advice, that he should be ruled out. We were hoping he’d be able to go, but if he’s not fit, then you got to pick players who are ready to go along,” Agarkar said.
The Indian test squad for the tour stands as follows: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK/VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav.
