The cricket fans all around the world were baffled by the news of Australian all rounder Marcus Stoinis announcing the retirement from ODI cricket ahead of the ICC champions trophy.
Marcus Stoinis has been playing for Australia in the limited overs format and has been a consistent performer for them in the ODI format, not just with the bat Marcus Stoinis was equally effective with the ball.
The Australian team are already dealing with the injuries of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazelwood and now with Marcus Stoinis announcing the retirement their chances of winning the tournament have been impacted quite heavily.
Here are the 3 potential replacements of Marcus Stoinis
1. Cooper Connolly
While batting under pressure and bowling some useful overs would be the ideal set of skills for this young Australian all-rounder, in terms of replacing the recently retired Stoinis, Cooper Connolly fits the bill perfectly as he can be floated in the batting order and bowl a good few effective overs.
Cooper Connolly was in top form throughout the recently concluded edition of the BBL. Scoring 351 runs, he averaged 50 with a strike rate of 131. Connolly’s campaign was especially remarkable because he played critical knocks under pressure, making him a frontrunner to be part of the Australian squad for the Champions Trophy in 2025.

2. Tim David
Tim David has established a reputation for finishing innings. He is able to come in lower in the order and turn any game around on the basis of power hitting. The right-handed lower middle-order batsman is also capable of bowling a few overs when required. However, he hasn’t done a lot with the ball lately.
In recent times, David had a good BBL. David amassed 254 runs in 9 innings during a title-winning run for the Hurricanes, with more than decent averages and strike rates. That said, he is well capable of bowling as well as finishing a game at any stage, thus fitting perfectly as a replacement for Stoinis, filling the finisher.
3. Micheal Owen
The young Australian batter caught the eye in the BBL 2024-25. Mitchell Owen was really very effective in some crucial games for the hurdle during the tournament and really did put on an impressive show in the big one to end the tournament. His awe-inspiring power hitting helped the Hurricanes race past the target and into the record books with their very first BBL trophy.
By looking at the current roster of players one believes Matthew Short would be their opener with Travis Head. If Owen is given a chance in the tournament, he could be slotted in Short’s place while possibly sending in someone to strengthen the middle-order from other players probably missing the tournament.
