England batter Harry Brook has pulled out of the upcoming IPL 2025. His decision was informed to the BCCI by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and was further relayed to the IPL governing council, who then informed the Delhi Capitals. For the second season in running, the former England U19 player has pulled out of the IPL.
Last year, the former Sunrisers Hyderabad player pulled out due to the death of his paternal grandmother. Notably, he was picked by the 2020 IPL finalists, Delhi. Brook also missed the preceding England tour of India 2024. Meanwhile, the 26-year-old’s decision to pull out of the IPL 2025 has left him on the verge of getting banned from the tournament for two years.
Last year, the IPL came up with a rule of banning players for two years who were registering themselves for the auction, getting picked but pulled due to various reasons. The tournament governing council decided that the players will be banned unless they pull out due to injury or some other tragic reasons. However, the reasons must be confirmed by the player’s home board.
The rule was brought after all the 10 franchises had expressed their frustrations on players pulling out right before the start of the tournament. In a note to franchises last September, the IPL said: “Any [overseas] player who registers for [an] auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons.”
“I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters” Harry Brook
The T20 World Cup 2022 winner took to Twitter to inform the fans about his IPL 2025 pullout. He wrote “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL,” Brook tweeted. “I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level.
