After some controversy over the decision to take out batter Tilak Varma, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene, spoke candidly about his reasoning. During a tense chase, Tilak had scored 25 runs off 23 balls before he was retired out in the second-to-last over. Jayawardene didn’t shy away from admitting that the choice was entirely his, as he felt that Tilak had been struggling to find his rhythm, even after being at the crease for a while. He explained that he wanted a fresh player to come in during those crucial last moments of the game.
Tilak did a good job for us after we lost our third wicket, especially in his partnership with Surya, Jayawardene mentioned. He was trying to get going, but things just weren’t falling into place for him. He had enough time in the middle and I thought by the last few overs he would be ready to get some good hits, but it didn’t happen. So, I made a tough call. I really needed someone fresh who could step in and take a shot because Tilak was having a rough go at it. It wasn’t an easy choice, but I felt it was needed at that moment,” he added during the post-match conference.

As for Tilak, who had been brought in to make an impact, things didn’t quite work out as planned before the last over. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya had quite a moment himself. Even though he didn’t contribute much with the bat, his outstanding bowling performance caught everyone’s attention at the stadium. He achieved his first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket, making history as the first captain in the IPL to do so.
Jayawardene praised Hardik, saying, “With all the experience he has, he figured out that bowling slower and at a back-of-length is exactly what we needed because we were leaking runs in the powerplay. It was essential to ease up the pace, which we should’ve done earlier too. That’s what makes experienced players valuable. They can adjust to the conditions and seize opportunities, and Hardik really stepped up with the ball. He helped swing the game back in our favor and gave us a fighting chance to chase down that total.”
