According to the ICC website, Australia captain Pat Cummins has told Sam Konstas to be patient as the young opener waits to make a big impact with the bat.
Konstas scored 25 and 0 in the win over the West Indies in the second Test in Grenada. Since his 50 against India at the MCG last year, he hasn’t scored more than 30. With an Ashes series against England later this year which is crucial for Australia’s ICC World Test Championship hopes, Cummins is advising the 19-year-old as he looks to become Australia’s long term opener.
Look, he’s been good, Cummins said about Konstas after Australia’s 133-run win over the West Indies. When you start your Test career, you’re picked because you’re good enough. Just focus on what makes you good. If you’re a batter, think about where you score runs, what pace you normally play at and don’t worry too much about each innings. The best batters in the world don’t hit their average most of the time. You’ll fail more often than you succeed. So, learn quickly, move well and give yourself the best chance. Judge yourself after a series, not after each innings, he added.
With the win in the second Test, Australia remains at the top of the World Test Championship table as the team looks to make it to the final for the third time in a row. Australia won their first World Test Championship in 2023 by beating India at The Oval but lost to South Africa in the final at Lord’s last month.
Cummins knows there’s still a long way to go before Australia makes it to the final but is happy with how his team has started the new cycle. It’s a dream start, Cummins said. Two wins from two gets us into the cycle. I’m thrilled with how we responded after Lord’s. It’s been a good couple of weeks, he added.

The third Test in the Caribbean will be new for both teams. The West Indies will host Australia in a day-night game with the pink ball in Jamaica. A new Dukes ball will also be used for the first time in day-night conditions and Cummins said he has no idea what to expect.
