The 6th edition of the Lanka Premier League is back but at a different time. The LPL will now be from November 27 to December 23, 2025, not in the middle of the year as usual.
According to Sri Lanka Cricket, the reason for this change is to get the LPL in line with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Sri Lanka wants its best players ready for the World Cup.
Cricket fans can look forward to action at three venues: Colombo (RPICS), Pallekele (PICS), and Dambulla (RDICS). The LPL is known for exciting cricket and this year should be the same. The tournament is close to the T20 World Cup 2026 so expect local and international players to come out strong.
But there are some issues. Earlier this year SLC ended its agreements with two franchises, Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers, as they didn’t meet their contract requirements.
This has had a big impact on the LPL. Jaffna, the most successful team in LPL history with three titles, is looking for its third owner while Colombo is looking for its fourth.
None of the first five franchise owners are involved now. The only teams left are Galle Marvels, Dambulla Sixers and Kandy Falcons all of which started last year.

Even with the problems off the field the LPL is still Sri Lanka’s main T20 league. Since it started in 2020 it’s become important for local cricketers to play with international players.
Now with the timing set just before the T20 World Cup there is more than just a trophy at stake. Players will want to impress the selectors and maybe get a spot for the World Cup.
