Ravichandran Ashwin posted on X (formerly Twitter) today that he’s done with the IPL. He’s looking forward to checking out other leagues around the world.
In his post, he said while his IPL days are over, he’s starting a new chapter of cricket in other leagues. This means he’s going to travel and play in different cricket tournaments around the world.
For those who don’t know, he already retired from international cricket during the Australia tour last year.
The 2025 IPL wasn’t his best. He took only 7 wickets and his economy was over 9. In fact it was his most expensive season ever. This performance put a damper on his return to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) where he started. Word was he wanted to know where he stood with CSK moving forward.

He was a big part of CSK’s success in the early years of the IPL. He’s ending his IPL career with 187 wickets, 5th in the list of highest wicket takers in the tournament. He was part of the CSK teams that won the IPL in 2010 and 2011. He was also the Player of the Tournament when CSK won the Champions League T20 in 2010.
After CSK he played for Rising Pune Supergiants, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. Before the 2025 season he came back to CSK for 9.75cr.
He also led Kings XI Punjab in 2018 and 2019 seasons. Although the team started well in both years, they couldn’t make it to the play-offs.
His retirement announcement means he might be trying his luck outside India in other T20 leagues. Dinesh Karthik played in the previous SA20 and about 13 Indian players have signed up for this year’s auction.
Note: According to BCCI rules, players who are playing in the IPL can’t play in leagues outside India. So it will be interesting to see if Ashwin retires from IPL, will he be able to play in other leagues.
