Anjum Chopra, the former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team and a well-known commentator, shared her views on Shreyas Iyer’s non-selection for the Asia Cup 2025, which starts on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates.
Despite his good showings in both domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), Iyer was left out of the T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Fans and many former cricketers didn’t like this decision, and they’ve been criticizing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selectors for ignoring Iyer.
Chopra acknowledged Iyer’s skills and performances in all forms of the game. Still, she suggested that the selectors must have had solid reasons for not including him in the Asia Cup 2025 squad.

Chopra told Crictoday, The positive things you mentioned about Shreyas Iyer – his recent form and his consistency in the IPL – everyone has noticed, including the selectors. Even so, he wasn’t chosen. That suggests they must have had compelling reasons, as they explained in the press conference.
She also thought Iyer should have been included in India’s recent Test tour of England. Chopra said that it’s normal for Iyer to feel disappointed, but he should keep performing well and trust the selectors’ choices.
Chopra added, As players, it’s disappointing because Shreyas deserved to be in the squad, even in England. But as a cricketer, I’d say you should just keep doing your best. Ultimately, the decision-makers have many options, and we should respect their judgment.
Iyer’s last T20 International match was on December 3, 2023, against Australia in Bengaluru. He played very well, scoring 53 runs off 37 balls, helping India win by six runs.
In his T20I career, Iyer has played 51 matches for India, scoring 1104 runs at an average of 30.67 and a strike rate of 136.13. He has eight half-centuries in T20Is, with his highest score being an unbeaten 74.
The future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODI cricket is a big topic, with talks of retirement increasing before the Australia tour in October.
Since they’ve already retired from Test and T20I cricket, some believe the upcoming ODI series in Australia could be their last.
Chopra thinks Kohli and Sharma should decide for themselves, saying that their time away from the public eye has led to speculation about their future with Team India in ODI cricket.
Chopra concluded, They’ve been at home for a while, away from the media and the cricket world. People miss them and are talking about them. When they come back on the field, all these talks will disappear. They’ll perform well because they’re great players. I don’t think we should make any decisions for them. When they play, everyone will be watching.
