The Indian women’s cricket team celebrated their record-breaking chase in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 final against all odds, lighting up Navi Mumbai on a Thursday evening. This gives us the chance to take a look at the three highest successful chases in Women’s ODIs.
3. 305/4 by Sri Lanka vs South Africa, Potchefstroom, 2024 (T-302)
Chamari Athapaththu was back again doing what she does best: demolishing the bowling line-up with ease. The Lankan captain seemed to have no problem at all in successfully completing the steep 302 runs target against one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament. Going for a solid 195 runs off just 139 balls, she was accompanied by 26 boundaries and five sixers.
Sustained by Nilakshika Silva’s composed 50 not out, Athapaththu made sure Sri Lanka reached the destination with just 44.3 overs gone, thereby winning the match by six wickets. Previous to this, South Africa had set 301/5 on the scoreboard, with Laura Wolvaardt’s splendid 184*, but this did not stop the Chamari-storm that tore through Potchefstroom.
2. 331/7 by Australia vs India, Vizag, 2025 (T-331)
This was a heartbreaking moment for the home crowd. The Indian Women team had already amassed a formidable score of 330 in a thriller World Cup 2025 group-stage match with Smriti Mandhana (80) and Pratika Rawal (75) leading the charge. Nevertheless, Alyssa Healy came along with a 142 off 107 balls and thereby raised Australia to a sensational chase.
Phoebe Litchfield (40) and Ashleigh Gardner (45) were great in their roles and made Australia’s eight wickets win with six balls to spare possible, marking what was then the highest successful chase in women’s ODI history.
1. 341/5 by India vs Australia, DY Patil, 2025 (T-339)
It was the ultimate pressure situation that India faced when they went for the chase amidst the cricketers’ showdown in the dark with the best team of the world and proved to society that perhaps a new star had come. Indian innings was simply amazing, and it was guided by Jemimah Rodrigues who made the best of the situation and was of course no less than a mountain.
Jemimah Rodrigues with her amazing 127 not out, besides 90 minutes of Kaur’s fireworks, brought the whole India in a situation where 167 runs were scored in partnership with other players to a position of control. Later, Deepti Sharma (24) and Richa Ghosh (26) also played crucial innings. India’s 341/5 in 48.3 overs not only marked the highest chase but also the end of a long wait for a women’s ODIs final with South Africa at World Cup 2025.
