The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League is likely to be more exciting because of the mega auction. It might change the equation and preview of every team, and the team which can do well at the auction will be confident to do well in the IPL 2024. The BCCI confirmed that the team can retain a maximum of six players (including RTM cards).
The IPL 2025 mega auction is likely to take place between November 2024 or January 2025. Hence, the first thing for all the franchises is to make sure that they retain the right players. According to the BCCI’s announcement, a team will have to retain a minimum of one or a maximum of two uncapped players. That means if a player retains four players and uses the Right To Match (RTM) cards to resign two players, to make it six retentions, it must include one uncapped player minimum.
So, who will be those uncapped players who might be retained? Remember some uncapped players from the last season like Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Dhurv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal, and a few more have made their debuts for India, so they won’t be in the category of uncapped players any more.

1. Kolkata Knight Riders (Harshit Rana and Angkrish Raghuvanshi)
The reigning champion Kolkata Knight Riders might see some changes as mentor Gautam Gambhir has left the team to join Team India. Then there will be a mega auction as well. Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Shreyas Iyer, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Rinku Singh are likely to be their top five retentions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Then they have a couple of good choices to pick as uncapped players.
Harshit Rana was superb last season and took 19 wickets in 13 games and did well for them. He is bowling well in the domestic circuit as well and is expected to be retained. 20-year-old Angkrish Raghuvanshi is another good option, who had a good start to his debut season. He scored 163 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 155.23. So, KKR can go for either of these two.
2. Sunrisers Hyderabad (Nitish Kumar Reddy)
Sunrisers Hyderabad finished the IPL 2024 as runners-up and were one of the best teams of the season. But they were unlucky to not win the title. But they will look to do that in the IPL 2025. They have a number of players to retain, and Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, Abhishek Sharma, T Natarajan, and Travis Head are among the first-choice retentions.
Abhishek was uncapped last season, but he has made his debut for India, so he can’t be in the uncapped category. But Nitish Kumar Reddy is someone who can be picked in the uncapped retention for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He scored 303 runs last season at a strike rate of 142.92 and is a genuine all-rounder.
3. Chennai Super Kings (MS Dhoni, Sameer Rizvi, Simranjeet Singh)
The biggest topic of discussion among the fans is MS Dhoni and his retirement. Everyone wants to see MS Dhoni play one more season, and the BCCI has certainly made a smart move. The BCCI has allowed the teams to retain a retired cricketer who hasn’t featured in international cricket for five or more years as an uncapped player.
And MS Dhoni can fall in that category. So, for CSK, MSD will be the pick as an uncapped player, but will he play in this category? Only he can tell. Apart from MSD, Chennai has the option of Sameer Rizvi and Simranjeet Singh, who are also pretty good to be retained. CSK finished the last season in fourth place, but they will be looking to win the 6th title in 2025.

4. Mumbai Indians (Nehal Wadhera)
Mumbai Indians won five titles in eight seasons between 2013 and 2020, but that team has finished at the bottom of the table in two of the last three seasons. So, something needs to be done as MI will look to end the long-awaited wait and win the sixth title. They might have a clear plan, as their retentions are likely to be Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma (RTM).
But in the uncapped player category, it is good for them that they don’t have many options. Nehal Wadhera is one guy who has shown promising signs since he joined the team. For MI, he has scored 350 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 140. So, he can be one guy whom MI can retain in the uncapped category ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

5. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Yash Dayal, Mahipal Lomror)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been waiting to get their hands on the trophy for the last 17 seasons. That desperation has reached its highest point, and the franchise wants to end the title drought in the IPL 2025. They will have a clear plan to retain the core group of players, which has Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj, Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, and Will Jacks.
These players can make a good side if we fit in some other faces. This is the core group to say. Then, RCB has a choice between Yash Dayal and Mahipal Lomror to choose from in the uncapped category. Yash was superb for them last season. He was RCB”s history wicket-taker with 15 wickets in the IPL 2025, so he is likely to be the first choice. Lomror gives the option of a finisher, and after Dinesh Karthik’s retirement, RCB needs someone at that place.

6. Rajasthan Royals (Shubham Dubey)
Rajasthan Royals finished the IPL 2024 in third place after losing the Qualifier to Sunrisers Hyderabad. But it was a good performance from them overall, and the franchise will look to carry on that in the coming season. But they need to first retain and pick the right set of players. Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Yuzvendra Chahal are likely to be the retentions for the franchise.
Riyan Parag made his debut for India in ODIs and T20Is, so he is not an uncapped player anymore. That’s where RR can go for the Shubham Dubey, whom they tired last season as well. He played four matches for them. Shubham is an exciting young talent and can be groomed well for the future.

7. Punjab Kings (Shashank Singh, Ashutosh Sharma)
Among all franchises, if one team will look to retain two uncapped players, it will be Punjab Kings. They might be doing a lot of chopping and changing, which they have already started in their coaching staff. Captain Shikhar Dhawan has retired, so they will look to retain Sam Curran, Arshdeep Singh, Liam Livingstone, and Kagiso Rabada ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
These are four retentions, then they will be looking to get back Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma both. These two uncapped stars made a good impression last season. Shashank was the top scorer for PBKS in 2024. He made 354 runs in 14 innings at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 164.65. Ashutosh made 189 runs at a strike rate of 167.25. These two showed a lot of promise, and they might be rewarded now.

8. Delhi Capitals (Abhishek Porel)
Delhi Capitals have yet to win the title in the Indian Premier League. They have come close a couple of times but haven’t broken that jinx. Well, the franchise looks eager to win the title, and they have sacked Ricky Ponting from coaching staff. They will be looking to retain Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Tristan Stubbs, who might be their top five picks.
But they need an uncapped player, which is a must. That’s when R. Abhishek Porel makes his case stronger. The Southpaw showed glimpses of his caliber last season and played a few good knocks. He batted in different positions and showed his versatility. He scored 327 runs in 12 innings at an average of 32.70 and a strike rate of 159.51 and is also a backup keeper.
9. Lucknow Super Giants (Ayush Badoni, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav)
Another franchise that can look to retain two uncapped players are Lucknow Super Giants. In the last three seasons, they had some really good youngsters coming up to the ranks. Ayush Badoni has been the top among them. Badoni has scored 634 runs in 35 innings for them with four half-centuries. Then, Mayank Yadav, who caught the eyes of everyone with his pace, is another good player.
The pacer bowled the fastest ball of the IPL 2024 and made headlines. He is still very young, and if groomed well, he can be dangerous. Mohsin Khan is another name that LSG can look to retain. He has played 24 matches for LSG and taken 27 wickets at an economy rate of 8.50. He can swing the ball and take wickets in death overs. So, these are the best options for LSG to choose from. Not to forget, KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, and Ravi Bishnoi are likely to be their first-choice retentions.

10. Gujarat Titans (Rahul Tewatia)
Gujarat Titans finished the last season in 8th place under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. They need to bounce back really well in the IPL 2025. They have a number of players whom they will retain. Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, and David Miller are likely to be among the first-choice retentions. For the one slot for uncapped players, they might look to retain Rahul Tewatia, who has been with the team since 2022. He has played some crucial knocks for the team and done well in crunch situations. His cool and calm head under pressure is a very rare quality. That’s why GT will look to have him back.
