India is a long time test playing nation. They are tough to beat at home in tests. They have produced great batsmen and bowlers. Still some visiting batsmen have played very well against Indian bowlers and scored a lot of runs in tests.

England’s Joe Root is at the top of this list. This right handed batsman has scored over 3000 runs in 33 tests against India, averaging over 57. The former England captain is the only batsman to score over 3000 test runs (and counting) against India. He has also scored 10 centuries and 13 fifties in 60 innings. His best against India was in February 2021 with a 218 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
2. Ricky Ponting – 2555
Australia’s Ricky Ponting is another batsman who has seen success against India in tests. From 1996 to 2012, Ponting played 29 tests against India. He scored 2555 runs in 51 innings at an average of 54.36. The former Australia captain scored 8 centuries and 12 fifties, with a highest score of 257.
3. Alastair Cook – 2431
Former England captain Alastair Cook played 30 tests against India. The left handed batsman scored 2431 runs in 54 innings at an average of 47.66. Cook scored 7 centuries and 9 fifties against India, with a highest score of 294. Interestingly Cook started and ended his test career against India. He scored centuries in both games.

4. Steve Smith – 2356
Australia’s Steve Smith has scored 2356 runs in 24 tests against India. In 46 innings he has an average of 58.90, with 11 centuries and 5 fifties. His highest score against India in tests was 192 in December 2014 at Melbourne Cricket Stadium.
5. Clive Lloyd – 2344
Clive Lloyd is at number 5. He played 28 tests against India in his career. The left handed batsman scored 2344 runs in 44 innings at an average of 58.60. He scored 7 centuries and 12 fifties and his highest score was 242* in a match in 1975 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
