Before his last Test against Bangladesh, Angelo Mathews spoke about his final game in Galle. On May 23, he announced that the first Test against Bangladesh in June would be his last with the red ball. Sri Lanka will play only four Tests in 2025, the fewest since 2013.
I played my 100th Test in Galle, so I wanted to say goodbye there. We don’t have many games coming up for a while. Our next Test is in a year, that’s a long time to wait, Mathews told ESPNcricinfo.
He also wanted to give his replacement in the second Test a chance since there won’t be many opportunities for that player until next year. I thought it would be good to let the guy replacing me play in the second Test, because he won’t get a game until next year (laughs). And who knows what might happen by then? So I figured I’d play one match and give him a shot.
