With so many franchise T20 leagues around the world, the Champions League T20 is likely to make a comeback thanks to International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are also in favour of this.
According to The Cricketer, the new World Cup Championship, renamed the World Club Championship, will be in 2026. This will be similar to the Champions League T20 with champions from top T20 leagues around the world.
Number of teams and leagues involved is yet to be decided but reports suggest ECB might favour The Hundred winners over T20 Blast champions.
Launched in 2009, the Champions League T20 was popular and had a good broadcasting deal. But it was stopped after 2015 as public interest declined. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won two titles each while New South Wales Blues and Sydney Sixers are also past winners.
Now with the increase in T20 leagues globally, a more competitive and watched World Club Championship is possible. Besides IPL and BBL, new leagues like MLC, ILT20 and SA20 have broadened the global T20 landscape.
