David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd wasn’t impressed with the Indian team’s many breaks during the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston. “My mates didn’t pay £85 to watch the grass grow,” he said.
Ravindra Jadeja took two breaks and suggested the ICC should make a rule where an injured player is replaced by a ‘new batter’.
India had a great second day. Shubman Gill scored a double-century and they reached 587/10, then the fast bowlers reduced England to 77/3 by the end of the day. Jadeja scored 89 (137).
“Only 15 minutes into the second morning, Jadeja stopped the game, had a drink and took a couple of pills after being hit on the hand,” Lloyd wrote in his column for the Daily Mail. “After 40 minutes, he took another break. The umpires seem helpless. No wonder we keep losing overs. The officials should use their power or the ICC should tell them that any injury must be treated off the field and a new batter should come in. Keep the game moving. My mates didn’t pay £85 to watch the grass grow.
Stokes wasn’t happy when Jadeja went into the ‘danger zone’ of the pitch while batting and complained to the umpires many times. I would have done the same.
I was interested in Ravindra Jadeja’s antics during the morning, he added. “He’s going to be bowling last on this pitch and he wants something to aim at. So he was down the pitch nearly every time he played, hitting it with his bat and scratching it with his feet. This is a very dry pitch and it will spin a lot later. Good job, Ravi. I’d have done the same.

The Edgbaston pitch has been easy to bat on so far but Jadeja hopes to get some spin out of it in the last two days.
