Gautam Gambhir has made it clear what he expects from the Shubman Gill led team as they prepare for the 5 match Test series against England. With Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin not part of the team, the team has a tough task ahead. Historically India has not done well in England but Gambhir wants the new players to focus on the opportunity rather than who’s not in the team.
In a BCCI video, Gambhir told his players they have two options: dwell on the three experienced players missing or see it as a great chance to do something special. He said, “We can either see this as a setback or as an amazing opportunity for us. I sense a lot of hunger and passion in this group and if we make sacrifices and push ourselves we can have a great tour. Let’s remember to enjoy playing for our country because there’s nothing better than that.”
Both Virat and Rohit announced their retirement from Test cricket during the IPL 2025 season just days before the selection committee was to pick the team for England.

It’s not clear what the BCCI and selectors told them that made them take the decision so suddenly. As for Ashwin he decided to step away from international cricket during the Australia tour realising he was not guaranteed a spot in the Indian Test team anymore.
