The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s decision to make Shubman Gill India’s Test captain after Rohit Sharma surprised some people. But the young Punjabi lad took up the job and has done okay in the ongoing Test series against England.
Gill is the series’ top scorer with 607 runs in just three games. He also led the team to their first win at Edgbaston. But he seems to be feeling the pressure as the team is 2-1 down in the five-match series.
Gary Kirsten, a former South African cricketer and former India coach, has praised Gill’s early leadership and advised him to become a great people person like MS Dhoni.
Well, it’s too early to tell. I think he has a lot of potential. Being a captain means you have to bring a lot of things together. He thinks well during the game. He’s a good player himself. But there are many things you need to get right, Kirsten told Rediff.com.
And I think being able to manage people is going to be important, like it is for any leader. Dhoni was amazing at managing people. If he can really improve that part of his leadership, I think he has what it takes to be a great captain for India.

Gill started the series with 147 at Headingley, followed by 269 and 161 in the two innings at Edgbaston. His total of 430 runs in a single Test is the second-highest match total in Test history. He also was Player of the Match in India’s 336-run win in Birmingham.
But, he had a bad day at Lord’s, scoring just 22 runs in two innings and India lost the match. Gill will now try to get back in form in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester and help India level the series.
