The Indian team in central Birmingham was told to stay indoors after a suspicious package was found at Centenary Square nearby.
A BCCI source told PTI that the players were asked to stay put after a message from Birmingham City Centre Police on social media. The Indian cricketers usually check out places near their hotel. Before the second Test, they were often seen on Broad Street.
Eight players including captain Shubman Gill practiced at Edgbaston. The other ten had the day off.
We have a cordon around Centenary Square in Birmingham as we investigate a suspicious package, Birmingham City Centre Police posted on X.
We got the alert before 3 pm and we evacuated some buildings as a precaution while it’s being looked at. Please stay away from the area.
An hour later the cordon was taken down.
Any changes ahead of the second test?
Indian captain Shubman Gill still thinks his team can win the series against England even if Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s best Test bowler, doesn’t play in the game at Edgbaston.
India is 1-0 down with four games to go after losing by 5 wickets in the first Test at Headingley last week.
Bumrah, a fast bowler, took 5-83 in the first innings but didn’t get a wicket in the second. England chased down 371.
Bumrah, 31, is recovering from a back injury. India had said earlier that he would play only three Tests in the series.

The third Test at Lord’s is just four days after the game in Birmingham ends.
Bumrah is available. We just need to figure out how much we can play him, Gill said at a press conference at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Of course you miss your best bowler if he’s not playing. But we knew before the series he would play only three Tests. We had plans for who would play if he didn’t. We will decide tonight.
