Jake Weatherald is making a statement to the selectors, he’s ready for Test cricket. The 30-year-old left-hander scored 183 for Australia A in Darwin. This is good timing as Australia are trying to finalise their opening pair for Tests.
Weatherald’s recent knock follows a big Sheffield Shield season where he was the top run-scorer. In the last year he has scored 1143 runs in first-class cricket at 57.15, four centuries.
As Australia prepare to play England in the Ashes later this year they might consider fresh options as Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja have been inconsistent recently. After his 183 off 275 balls Jake Weatherald feels a Test call-up could be close.
He told Cricket.com.au that his hard work in domestic cricket is driven by the desire to represent his country. As a batter you want to put yourself in contention to play for Australia. That’s why we are here; that’s why you play domestic cricket. Scoring runs is the best way to get higher honours. It was a good chance to get a big score and I was lucky I did. That’s how it is: scoring runs gets you higher honours, Weatherald said.
McSweeney, Sam Konstas and others are also in the mix to open with Usman Khawaja in the Ashes but Weatherald’s form has put him in the frame. He said he’s ready to take the opportunity if it comes during the Ashes.

If you keep scoring runs you’ll get noticed and that’s what I’ve done. There are some other good candidates who have earned their spot. Being among them is a great feeling. I’m batting well and I’m ready if that moment comes, he said.
The Australia A vs Sri Lanka A game ended in a draw. Now Weatherald is gearing up for Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield season and possibly two four-day games on the India A tour in September. Those games in Lucknow will be different.
