Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie thinks this West Indies tour might be Marnus Labuschagne’s last chance. He says if Labuschagne doesn’t perform, he’s in trouble for the Ashes. Marnus has struggled lately, including a tough time as an opener in the World Test Championship final against South Africa. Over the 2023-25 cycle he’s scored 974 runs in 20 innings at 27.82 with one hundred and eight fifties.
His last Test hundred was in July 2023 against England and since then he’s averaged 24.74 in 16 Tests with 668 runs and seven fifties in 30 innings. On SEN he said it’s a tough situation. He pointed out Labuschagne’s numbers over the last two years haven’t been great. If he plays in the Caribbean this might be his last shot. If he doesn’t perform he’s in real trouble for the Ashes, he said.

Gillespie also thinks either Labuschagne or Usman Khawaja could miss out on the West Indies tour which starts June 25 with three Tests. With Steve Smith and Travis Head pretty much locked in at four and five, the number three spot is up for grabs. He wondered if Josh Inglis, the wicketkeeper-batter who scored a hundred on his debut against Sri Lanka, could fit that role even though he bats in the middle order.

I think Steve Smith is best at four and Travis Head at five, Gillespie said. The selectors need to work out if Inglis or Marnus is the right fit for three. If they are then one of them should play. If not then they should look at some of the domestic players who have been performing well in Sheffield Shield to take that spot at three.
