England’s red-ball team might get another star for sometime in the fourth or fifth Test of this India series with Mark Wood now looking set to return from injury. England selector Luke Wright gave these positive updates on Wood’s recovery from his knee operation.
The 35-year-old fast bowler, known for his pace and ability to reverse swing, had surgery after England’s premature departure from the 2025 Champions Trophy and has essentially been out for nearly four months. Wright spoke on Sky Sports about Wood starting light bowling and progressing well on his recovery path.
“I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign. So, he’s on the road to recovery. If we can get him back, he might be ready for the fourth or fifth Test. We’re taking it one day at a time and making sure he’s alright,” Wright said.
His comeback would give the bowling department a huge boost for the latter half of the series, which has almost always been treated with respect by the Indians for his pace.

Wright also gave an update on Jofra Archer, who got thumb-injured at the end of IPL 2025 and was out for the first Test but reportedly would be back for the second. That means for the first leg of the tour, when Archer, Wood, and Gus Atkinson are unavailable, the ECB has recalled Jamie Overton to the Test squad again after more than three years.
