Nathan Lyon, a legendary Australian spinner, made history on Saturday, February 1, as the first spinner and second-ever bowler to claim 200 wickets in the World Test Championship. This was during the first session of play on the fourth day of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium. Pat Cummins, Australia’s Test and ODI captain, was the first-ever bowler to cross the remarkable milestone of 200 wickets in the WTC. This was achieved at the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia on January 5, 2025.
Lyon is now in Galle playing his 49th WTC match for the Baggy Greens; thus, should he secure another wicket, he will break Cummins’s record and become the highest wicket-taker in WTC history.
Under the captaincy of Steve Smith, Lyon – Australia’s third-highest Test wicket-taker – bowled well to capture three wickets as the visitors bundled out Sri Lanka for a mere 165 and enforced the follow-on.
