Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally broke their long-standing jinx against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. They managed to pull off a thrilling 12-run victory in their IPL 2025 match. RCB took to the field first and set a daunting target of 221 runs for the hosts by scoring 221 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs. When it was their turn to bat, Mumbai Indians could only muster 209 runs for 9 wickets, handing RCB their third win in four matches.
The team, led by Rajat Patidar, has been impressive on the road this season, winning all three of their away matches. Interestingly, their only loss came when they played at home. They’ve had some solid wins against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, and now Mumbai Indians at their home ground. With this win, RCB has made history, becoming the first team since Kings XI Punjab in 2012 to defeat MI, CSK, and KKR all at their home grounds in the same season.
These three teams—MI, CSK, and KKR—are the biggest names in IPL, boasting a total of 12 championship titles between them. Both MI and CSK have clinched the trophy five times each, while KKR has three titles under their belt. Among the teams that have been around since the first ever IPL in 2008, RCB, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals are still searching for their first title. RCB has reached the finals three times—in 2009, 2011, and 2016—but the trophy has still eluded them.
This season, RCB made a significant change by appointing Patidar as the new captain. They parted ways with Faf du Plessis, who had led the team for the last three years, before the big auction of 2024. Du Plessis found a new home with Delhi Capitals during that auction.
In IPL 2024, RCB managed to reach the playoffs, finishing fourth in the standings before getting knocked out by Rajasthan Royals in the eliminator match. There was some talk about bringing back the batting legend Virat Kohli as captain, but the team confirmed Patidar would lead them going forward. As it stands, RCB is currently sitting in third place with six points after playing four matches. It’s shaping up to be an exciting season for them!
