New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has appointed Rob Walter as the new head coach of the men’s cricket team after Gary Stead’s resignation from the post. The vacancy has thus been filled by Walter.
Having coached teams such as Otago Volts and Central Stags in New Zealand domestic cricket, Walter is no stranger to coaching. Walter was also the head coach of South Africa, leading them to the semi-finals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, the semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
With South Africa’s success during his tenure, NZC believes the Black Caps can succeed under his tutelage, starting mid-June to the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Alongside this, Walter will lead preparations for the World Test Championship cycles, the 2028 LA Olympics, the 2027 World Cup, and the 2026 and 2028 T20 World Cups.
Walter was delighted about the role: “The BLACKCAPS have been a successful team for a while now, and it’s a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that. It’s a great opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and staff during this busy time with many global events and huge series ahead.”
Thinking strategically and managing players effectively, Walter took the Otago Volts into the Super Smash playoffs of the 2019-20 season and led the Central Stags to the Ford Trophy final in 2021-22. He also coached New Zealand A team and acted as an assistant coach to the Pune Warriors and the Delhi Daredevils presently called Delhi Capitals.
