Sanju Samson, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals, recently got hit with a fine because his team didn’t bowl their overs fast enough during a match against the Gujarat Titans. This game was part of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Since this was the second time this season that his team had fallen behind on over-rate rules, he received a hefty fine of INR 24 lakhs.
According to Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offenses, a second offense results in a INR 24 lakh fine for the captain. Additionally, each member of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, has been fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lesser.
But it’s not just Sanju who’s feeling the pinch. All the players in the starting eleven, including the Impact Player, are also facing fines. Each of them will have to pay either INR six lakhs or a quarter of their match fee, whichever amount is smaller. It’s a tough reminder about the importance of keeping pace in the game, and it serves as a wake-up call for everyone on the team.
In the match, Gujarat Titans posted a formidable total of 217/6 in their 20 overs, with Sai Sudharsan scoring 82 off 53 balls. In response, Rajasthan Royals were bowled out for 159 in 19.2 overs, resulting in a 58-run defeat. Shimron Hetmyer top-scored for RR with 52 runs, while Sanju Samson contributed 41. Prasidh Krishna was the standout bowler for GT, claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs
